 Diesel generators generate a lot of heat during operation, and internal components need to be cooled frequently in order not to damage the generator. Most diesel generators are air-cooled or liquid-cooled. The cooling method is a fundamental design element of the generator and is usually determined by the power and type of the generator. Air cooling systems are often used for small generators, but larger generators require a liquid cooling system.

In an air-cooled diesel engine, under high-temperature conditions, the oil will decompose relatively quickly, so the durability will be slightly reduced. Liquid cooling systems use several types of oil/coolant to cool the internal components of the generator. Compared with the air-cooled system, the cooling effect of the liquid-cooled system is much superior, so the price of the liquid-cooled generator is higher than that of the air-cooled unit. Basically, an air-cooled engine can rival that of a small car.

The liquid cooling system consists of a radiator and a water pump that distributes the liquid coolant to the engine block through hoses. The heat is transferred to the coolant, which is cooled by the air through the radiator. Generally speaking, the latest diesel generators over 22kw are liquid-cooled, and air-cooled engines are the mainstream portable generators. Liquid-cooled systems are more expensive to manufacture than air-cooled diesel and require additional design considerations and components, such as radiators. Liquid cooling is more durable and more powerful than air-cooled. Since these types of generator combinations are more expensive, they are widely used in commercial and industrial applications, where they have greater cooling requirements than small residential and portable equipment.

The oil radiator of a diesel generator is a device that promotes the heat dissipation of lubricating oil and keeps it at a lower temperature. High-performance, high-power reinforced engines require the installation of oil radiators due to their high thermal load. The oil radiator is arranged in the lubricating oil circuit, and its working principle is the same as that of the air conditioner.

Each system has advantages and disadvantages. Air-cooled systems are simpler and less expensive than liquid-cooled systems. Liquid cooling systems are more robust and efficient. At the end of the day, the cooling system you choose is likely designed to be adequate for your needs. Liquid cooling systems are widely used and can be used in any environment.
